Worcestershire Group of Advanced Motorists

Our History

Formed in 1977, with the aim of promoting the objectives of the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) by encouraging motorists to be interested in road safety and the Advanced Driving Test, by:
  • Organising meetings and events open to all members of the general public;
  • Publicising the IAM and the Group in Worcestershire.
The group functions entirely with a volunteer workforce, all active members in all positions give up their time freely. The group offers "non-charged" guidance to motorists in their own vehicles, to help them develop the necessary skills to pass the Advanced Driving Test.
In 1982 a "Young Drivers" scheme was started using unadopted roads on a trading estate near Kidderminster and is aimed at young adults between the ages of 15-17 years, giving them the opportunity to learn to drive under controlled conditions. Image of the Black Pear Tree
In 1985 the Worcestershire Group of Advanced Motorcyclists was formed within the local group but since 1990 they have operated as an independent motorcycle group.

In 1991 the Worcestershire Group of Advanced Motorists became a registered charity.

In 1994 the Redditch Group was formed.

The Kidderminster Group was formed from a Worcestershire sub-group in 1999.

Group social meetings are held quarterly at the Countryside Centre, Worcester Woods Country Park, Worcester. At our meetings, we usually have an outside guest speaker and an opportunity to present certificates to candidates who have recently passed their Advanced Driving Test. We like to keep the meetings informal, an occasion to meet other members and have a chat with a coffee. Meetings start at 8pm and usually finish at 10pm. The meetings are open to members and friends.
